What's going on...
THE WEEK AHEAD - The office and church will be closed on Monday. Please use our answering service for messages. Weekday Masses will be Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. ~~~~~ SYNOD 2007 The Rector and parish of St. George - Las Vegas - made us all very welcome. The attendance was excellent and delegates made worthwhile contributions in most of the sessions. The Bishop felt that the session dealing with “final things” was not well attended. Maybe the subject matter is difficult for some. We will have to repeat that material again - since it is the way to provide for the future - and also the provision of Clergy. The sessions on youth and young people saw a great response - and Father Gideon writes of this elsewhere. The ACW - as usual - brought a good response - Lynda Volpe writes about it below. The Masses were all reverently celebrated and well attended. The Bishop administered the sacrament of Confirmation and gave First Communion during the Solemn Mass that heralded the end of the Synod. Our thanks are due to our own delegates - especially Vaylord and Susan Cox - Jennifer Morrison - Dr. Bob and Barbara Aikman - Father Gideon and Amanda - Joseph and Lynda Volpe - Don Unruh. We are deeply indebted to Linda Unruh - who as Registrar oversaw the whole event. Believe it or not - she is already into Synod 2008! Thanks everyone. ~THIS AND THAT ~
THE BISHOP celebrated Mass for Trinity Mission in Henderson - on Sunday morning. The afternoon saw both Jennifer and the Bishop caught up in the colorful festivities of a Mass of Confirmation for a Hispanic community at Holy Family Chapel in Boulder City. It was a great use of time and energy. SYNOD 2008 - is to take place HERE in Tulsa! I was not joking when I said above that Linda Unruh was already into the initial planning stage. It takes ONE YEAR to produce a quality Synod. You can be sure - dear Reader - that You will have a part to play in it. . . . ACW Lynda Volpe reports - Our annual ACW Synod Silent Auction was an outstanding success raising $2,100! Seventy-two items were displayed, and the top two items raising the most money came from All Saints! The high bid on Marty Smith's fringed bedspread was $160 and the high bid on Diane Carter's "Madonna" was $140. Most sincere thanks to Susan Cox, Diane Carter and Marty Smith who donated a total of twelve items from All Saints this year. Our ACW Business Meeting had a good turnout. The monies raised at the silent auction will be part of our ACW Project Outreach; a portion will be given to a charity in our Synod host state, Nevada, and a portion to one of our Southwest Diocese mission churches. YOUTH Father Seaman reports - This year at Synod, there was a resounding theme of increasing support for our Sunday School/Youth programs. It was wonderful to see the Holy Spirit working in all of our churches and “stirring up” the hearts of the faithful for this essential work. To sum up the Youth Meeting, Father Gideon gave a basic overview of where the Christian education in our Diocese is headed. Working together with the Sunday School program, a unified Anglican Christian Education program (A.C.E.) will be in the works this coming year. A Board of Education will be appointed by the Bishop which will endeavor to create a standardized curriculum for the education of all our children—from K-12. Not only will this new program build upon the current Sunday School program which we have in place, but it will also assure a seamless transition from Sunday School to Youth Group to active young members. This is an exciting stage for the youth in our Diocese and we are looking forward to receiving the Standards by next Synod. THE CHOIR steps down after today’s Mass - for a well-earned summer recess. Music - both instrumental and vocal - is an essential part of the Liturgies that are celebrated here. We value our Choir Members and the contributions that they make - of time and talents. We are always looking for new and capable voices. THE BISHOP leaves for California on Thursday. He will take part in the election of the new Archbishop of our Province - in St. Peter’s ProCathedral - on St. Peter’s Day. He will return to Tulsa on Saturday and preside at the Mass on Sunday. Your prayers are asked for the Council of Bishops as - under the guidance of the Holy Spirit - they elect the new Archbishop. Pray brethren.
